Maybe it is just me, but summer brings so much goodness. The onset of July brings many things, one of the most favorite being sun-ripened blueberries.
Those sweet, tangy, beautiful berries that burst with flavor are also touted by research as having an abundance of health benefits including a decreased risk of heart attack. It is well known that blueberries are full of antioxidants. We've heard that eating a handful of berries a day may ward off cancer. They say that berries are helpful for reduced inflammation and overall healthy joints. But are there other benefits for athletes? It turns out that evidence suggests that there is. One study came up with results that indicated that consuming blueberries will lead to higher rates of muscle recovery after exercise. The previous benefits were enough to convince me, but this study just gives me more incentive to incorporate berries into my diet on a daily basis.
For people looking to improve their health, well-being, and/or athletic performance, summer brings the perfect opportunity to access the small but mighty berry. Pick them up at the grocery store, support your community at a local farmers market or take a day trip with friends to a berry farm.
Summer only comes once a year and the season for berries doesn’t last forever. Bite into the fruits of summer and relish the simplicity of happiness and goodness.
